New road section in north west Sutherland opened
A ceremony was held today (Monday) to mark completion of the 1km section of the A838 Lairg to Tongue road, north of Laxford Bridge.
The £850,000 scheme realigned and widened the existing single track road to a modern two-lane standard.
The work was carried out by Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd for The Highland Council.
Schoolchildren from Kinlochbervie High School visited the site during construction and returned to see the finished job at today’s opening.
They joined the council’s chair of Transport, Environmental & Community Services, Councillor Graham Phillips in cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of the road.
Councillor Phillips said: “It is always a red letter day when we open a new stretch of road. This improvement is very welcome indeed in this distinctive corner of the Highlands, allowing motorists to make their journeys in a safer fashion and cutting time off journey times.”
Susan Robertson, Head Teacher of Kinlochbervie High School, said: “Our pupils have shown a great interest in the project and were delighted to be part of the official opening ceremony. They had many questions to ask the council and the contractor and I am sure they have learned greatly from their day with the people who designed and who built the new stretch of road.”
