New Land’s End to John O’Groats record set by female tandem cycling pair
An NHS worker and a bicycle instructor have set a new women’s Tandem Land’s End to John O’Groats record.
Hannah Fawcett and bicycle instructor and mechanic Ede Harrison had aimed to complete the 839-mile ride in less than three days.
They took just under 67 hours when they reach John O’Groats at just before 1am on Wednesday.
Their provisional time, was 2 days, 18 hours, 49 minutes and 52 seconds.
Together the pair cycled across Britain on a tandem cycle while raising awareness of kidney disease, and raising money for Kidney Care UK, the UK’s leading kidney patient support charity.
So far they have raised over £3400 on their JustGiving funder.
Kidney disease affects 1 in 10 people in Liverpool. Hannah works as an NHS kidney consultant at Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust and Ede works as a bike mechanic and cycling instructor in Leeds. The pair had been training for 10 months before taking on the epic cycling feat.
Hannah said before setting off: “This will be and a real challenge for both of us, we will be stretching our endurance to the limits. But we wanted to try to set a new record as well as raise the profile of kidney disease.
“I see the first-hand effect that kidney disease has on people in Liverpool every day. It’s not just the person with the disease but their whole family feels the impact. I’m lucky to have also seen the amazing work that Kidney Care UK does to support thousands of people with this disease and we couldn’t have chosen a better charity to support.”
Kidney Care UK provides practical, emotional and financial support to kidney patients and their families. The charity also campaigns at a national and government level to improve kidney health and care services as well as funding patient-centred projects to help improve care services throughout the UK.
Jasmine Williams, challenge events manager at Kidney Care UK, adds: “We can’t thank Hannah and Ede enough for all they are doing to raise awareness of kidney disease. We receive no government funding so we rely on the generosity of our kind supporters and fundraisers, like Hannah and Ede. Their support will help us to ensure that no one faces kidney disease alone.”
