Ness Bridge has been lit up in the colours of the Union flag to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in what is just one of a number of ways the local authority will mark the occasion of Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

The pictures were captured by Inverness South councillor Duncan Macpherson last night.

The council will be flying the flag at all its locations across the region with flagpoles including the Town House and the council HQ but it is also marking the events by supporting the Queen's Green Canopy tree planting initiative.

However, unlike Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Highland Council is not organising events itself and has instead opted to support local, grassroots events largely developed by community councils.

There are a number of road closure notices for street parties of various kinds across the area including in Tain, Dingwall, Muir of Ord, Nairn, Aviemore, Kingussie, Carrbridge, Laggan and a beacon lighting at Grantown followed by a party.

Times and locations should be checked with local groups and councils running the festivities.
