The communities of Melvich and Portskerra were in festive spirit on Sunday, December 8 with their annual Christmas Tree Lights Turning-On event.

Around 60 Melvich and Portskerra community members braved the “dreary” weather, with organisers praising the community for a “fantastic turnout”.

Organized by Melvich Community SCIO (MCS) volunteer members, as it has been for the past few years, event goers enjoyed tea and coffee, with mulled wine, mince pies, and other refreshments also on hand for those who attended.

Members of a local choir, The Big Sing, provided entertainment for the evening, when they performed a series of Christmas carols.

A spokesperson for the event said: “We’d like to thank SSEN for donating a beautiful tree to the community, which was placed in the community garden on the footprint of the old village hall.

“Our thanks also go to Melvich Community Council for granting MCS a micro-grant, allowing us to purchase lights for the tree and refreshments for the event.

“And a special mention must go to the Big Sing Choir for their carol singing, which was greatly appreciated and all the volunteers that donated their time to making the night such a great success.”

Melvich Community SCIO (MCS), was formed and is dedicated to rebuilding the local village hall in Melvich, which was demolished due to structural issues. The charity is run entirely by volunteers.
