Lairg and District Learning Centre has been awarded £1950 from Bord na Gàidhlig to extend its Gaelic language sessions for adults.

The funding is part of an overall £89,520 granted to 35 community projects in Scotland from the Bord’s Taic Freumhan Coimhersnachd funding scheme.

The successful projects include Gaelic language classes, Mod and Comann nam Pàrant groups and schemes which aim to support the Gaelic language.

Lairg and District Learning Centre manager Rhionna Mackay said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve had to move to delivering classes digitally. This has meant we’ve been joined by students from across Scotland for our Gaelic language sessions. They have been so popular that we’ve been fully booked.

“This award will allow us to offer more beginners and intermediate level speakers digital Gaelic sessions to meet the current demand and we are excited to reach even more students who want to learn to speak Gaelic.”

Bord na Gàidhlig’s director of language planning and community developments David Boag said: “We’re pleased to support a wide range of projects which will increase the learning of Gaelic in communities across Scotland.”
