Mixed weather fails to dampen Melvich Sheepdog Trials





The annual Melvich Novice Sheepdog Trials took place at Kirkton Farm last Saturday, October 25.

Competitors and spectators alike braved a day of mixed weather to enjoy some fine displays of teamwork between handlers and their dogs.

A total of 13 dogs took part, with Michael Shearer of Lythmore serving as judge for the day.

Local handler Michael Findlay of Melvich took first place with his dog Fred, scoring an impressive 78 points.

In second place, close behind on 76 points, was last year’s winner Daniel Worthington, Scarsferry, with his new dog Roy.

Third place also went to Michael Findlay, this time with his second dog Taff, who earned 69 points.

In fourth place was Ian Matherson with Rinn.

Michael’s winning dog, Fred. is a pup from Daniel Worthington’s dog Buzz, who claimed victory in the trials for two consecutive years previously.

Competitors came from both near and far, including participants from Inverness and Dornie, near Skye.

Juanella Findlay, who helps organise the event, expressed her gratitude to all who made the day possible.

She said: “We were again given great support from lots of local businesses,, with our main supporter being Wind2.

“Without everyone’s donations and help, it just wouldn’t be possible to run such a great event.”

Thanks were also extended to everyone who came to watch, compete and lend a hand on the day and alo to those who bought raffle tickets, whisky tickets and lucky squares.

Juanella added: “See you all again next year!”
