Mini Mayhem 2022 – a fundraising coastal tour of the UK involving three, 20-year-old minis and a team of drivers – is set to hit Caithness and Sutherland today.

It is the latest in a series of challenges to be undertaken by "The Musketeers", a non-profit group which raises funds for various charities, in this instance Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

The group bought three old minis, which they named Athos, Aramis and Porthous after the three musketeers in the eponymous French historical adventure novel, for a maximum of £500, and aim to complete the 4,000-mile journey in 10 days, without sat-nav and avoiding motorways.

Mini Mayhem set out from the White Hart Pub in Lymington, Hampshire, at 6.30am on Thursday, June 9, and it is hoped to be back there by next Saturday, June 18.

The run was scheduled to set off from Pettycur Bay Holiday Park, near Kircaldy in Fife, early this morning and stop off for breakfast at Dundee, before heading north and travelling up the east coast to John O'Groats, staying in the camp site there tonight.

The team is hoping to get a wave or a beep from folks along the way.

The two silver and one white Minis, which are covered in stickers, will set off again on Monday morning heading along to Thurso, then on to Durness and down the west coast to Ullapool, before stopping in Spean Bridge for the night.

Donations to the Great Ormond Street Hospital have been good so far and the team are encouraging people to go on their JustGiving page.

"We are taking donations as we go," said Tony Barnes, one of the drivers. "When we stop people just come up and hand you a tenner, which is pretty impressive. We are up to £7000 already and we are only on day two – we have a target of £10,000, but aim to exceed that."

The Musketeers are also running a competition to guess the combined mileage that the three cars will cover during the challenge. They plan to complete the trip on Saturday, June 18.

More information can be found on their website www.themusketeers.co.uk as well as social media, including Facebook.
