The Marine Conservation Society’s annual Great British Beach Clean is back for a whole week of beach cleaning events, rather than the usual weekend, running from September 18-25.

This year the charity’s flagship citizen science project is encouraging more people than ever to become organisers and set up their own beach clean and litter survey with friends, family or ‘bubbles’, in line with Scottish Government guidance.

A spokeswoman for the society said: "In celebration of Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters, recognising the value of the country’s blue spaces, it’s never been more important to care for the coastline.

"Organising a beach clean and litter survey will ensure Scottish beaches remain beautiful and litter free for the future."

This year, the charity hopes to collect data on personal protective equipment including gloves and masks to get a more accurate picture of the impact these newly commonplace items are having on the environment.

For those unable to make it to the coast this year, the Marine Conservation Society is providing a downloadable ‘Source to Sea Litter Quest’ so that everyone can play their part in keeping our beaches beautiful even from afar.

Some 2900 volunteers took part in the 2019 beach clean event and collected nearly 500 items of litter per 100m of beach.
