A HELMSDALE fly-tyer is to sell flies he is making while being in lockdown, in aid of charity.

John Sutherland has designed a fly he has named Covid-19 and has so far made 100 in different sizes and doubles, tubes, waddington shanks design.

He has so far sold 54 to friends in the area at £5 per fly, with proceeds being shared between Highland Hospice, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

But he hopes to persuade fishing tackle shops to also sell them in store and on line.

John told us: “The pattern for this fly is associated with the definition of nature’s colouring, namely yellow for hope; orange – enthusiasm; red – blood; green – growth (new beginnings after Covid-19); pink – femininity and mother earth; purple – ambition for the future; black – death; gold – prosperity, wealth; silver – creativity.

“I, like many, have thought about the tragic consequences Covid-19 is having on people in all walks of life .

“What small part could I play in funding worthwhile charitable organisations who are currently struggling.

“This was where the idea for the Covid-19 fly came from.”
