Local authority refuse and recycling collections operating as usual over Easter despite pandemic - but get your bins out early
Highland Council is reminding people that household refuse and recycling collections will be operating as normal over the Easter bank holiday.
However residents are advised to make sure their bins are out by 7am on the scheduled collection day as there may be changes to collection times.
The council is also taking the opportunity to remind people about other arrangements in place for waste services – and how they can help – at the present time.
To help protect waste crews and prevent the spread of coronavirus on collection routes people are asked to: regularly clean bin handles and lids; wash hands before and after touching bins; make sure bin lids are firmly closed to help prevent crews unnecessarily touching them; and let bin collection crews know what they are doing is appreciated by giving them a wave or a smile.
A council spokesman added: "Bottle banks are still available across the Highlands for glass and jar recycling so please continue to recycle your glass bottles and jars, ensuring you observe social distancing.
"Household Waste Recycling Centres are currently closed due to the government’s decision to restrict all but non-essential movement. Residents are being asked to act responsibly by not putting waste you may have taken to an HWRC in your household bins as it may overwhelm collection services.
"Please avoid carrying out large DIY projects unless you have space to store the waste. If you decide to have a clear-out while you’re at home, please don’t put everything in the bin. Store it safely in a garage or shed until normal service resumes."
As the brown bin garden waste service has also been suspended until further notice, people are being encouraged to start home composting their grass cuttings and hedge trimmings where possible.

To remind people of what they can do to help the waste crews, the council has created a short animation that highlights key points.
