Journalist and researcher team up on new podcast for people living with Parkinson's
A new podcast series aims to highlight new research opportunities for people living with Parkinson’s.
The series, from North of Scotland Parkinson’s Research Interest Group (NoSPRIG), is hoping to increase awareness and involvement in research. It is hosted by Julie Jones and Helga Macfarlane.
People up here sometimes think all the research is happening down south, but as the first three episodes demonstrate, that is not the case.
Julie is a physiotherapist and senior researcher at Robert Gordon University. Helga is a former journalist who lives with Parkinson’s and aims to raise awareness.
Julie said that while other interest groups have seen success through ‘meet the researcher’, this would be too difficult for NoSPRIG since they cover such a big area.
The podcasts are based on recorded conversations with researchers, answering questions by people living with Parkinson’s.
Helga added: “People up here sometimes think all the research is happening down south, but as the first three episodes demonstrate, that is not the case.”
She also believes “another misconception is that research is always lab-based, whereas what we want to show is that there is research in the north of Scotland, which is not lab based, and is very relevant to the everyday lives of people like me, who have Parkinson’s.”
The podcast is on Podbean, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and Podchaser.
