Popular Bonar Bridge school “jannie” Joan Murray has been named public servant of the year in the Highland Heroes awards.

Supporters nominated her for her boundless energy and enthusiasm, saying her “can-do” attitude was a huge asset to the school.

One said: “She cares for staff and pupils as if they were her own family.”

Highland Heroes is run by Northern Times publisher SPP Media Group and sponsored by Inverness Airport. The awards ceremony took place at the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness, with Northern Times columnist Nicky Marr as host.

Accepting the award surrounded by supporters from her family, village and school, Mrs Murray said it was they, rather than she, who deserved a medal.

“I am speechless. I can’t believe I was nominated. I can’t believe I have one this award,” she said.

“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. It is incredibly kind and thoughtful. Thank you.”

Fellow Bonar Bridge resident Ruby MacDonald, who joined Mrs Murray at her table, said: “Joan is a wonderful friend and a legend in the village.”
