‘It will be an event to remember’: Patrick Sellar trial to be re-enacted at Syre Church, Strathnaver, followed by community meal
A north coast community organisation is to stage a re-enactment of the trial of notorious Sutherland Estates factor Patrick Sellar.
North Sutherland Community Forest Trust says that the re-enactment, which will be followed by a community meal, will be a memorable event.
Patrick Sellar, who was born in 1780, is infamous for the way he treated tenants on his employer’s estates.
The policy of evicting them from their holdings in order to introduce sheep farming led to his trial on charges including culpable homicide after he and his men burnt down a house with someone still inside.
He was acquitted but was finished as factor to George, 1st Duke of Sutherland. Sellar continued to farm in the county.
The trial will be held at Syre Church, Strathnaver, on Friday, November 8, from 3.30pm and the meal at Strathnaver Hall from 6pm. People attending the trial will form the jury.
Organisers are asking people at the meal to pay what they are willing or able to donate.
