Road surfaces in the far north are reported to be icy this morning after another night of sub-zero temperatures in the Highlands.

Highland Council's reports from operational staff suggest that ice is commonplace on routes throughout Caithness and Sutherland on Tuesday morning.

There was black ice recorded on the roads around Lybster and Westerdale, with rain falling on frozen surfaces in a few isolated areas, according to the Caithness team.

In Sutherland, conditions were reported to be very icy with rain, sleet and snow falling on frozen surfaces and readily forming ice.

Treatment was ongoing on routes across the Highlands.

Roads are gritted according to Highland Council's route priority maps, available at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting

Drivers and other road users are advised to make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.
