Police were called in after a couple's late-night argument escalated, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday.

It led to Raymond Somerville spending Hogmanay in a cell. The 29-year-old, of The Croft, Auchorn Road, Dunbeath, admitted a reduced charge of breach of the peace.

The incident, on December 31, last year, occurred at the home of his long-time partner, in Sinclair Lane, Halkirk. Both she and the accused had been drinking.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald invited Sheriff David Sutherland to treat the incident as "a one-off".

He deferred sentence for six months to give Somerville a chance to demonstrate he can behave.
