Six beds at Highland Hospice's in-patient unit have been upgraded thanks to surplus donations – and the older beds have been donated to NHS Highland to help respond to the coronavirus.

Money left over from the Give a Cuddle campaign, which raised enough money to support the purchase of two state-of-the-art cuddle beds, has been invested in the new in-patient beds which arrived on Wednesday.

A hospice spokeswoman said: "Last year, thanks to your generous donations, our Give a Cuddle campaign raised enough money to support the purchase of two state-of-the-art cuddle beds. These extra-capacity beds arrived at the hospice in January and have already made a big difference, enabling our patients to cuddle up close with their loved ones.

"But the success of our Give a Cuddle campaign doesn’t stop there. With the additional money you helped to raise, we’ve been able to upgrade a further six beds in our in-patient unit.

"We were delighted to welcome these new beds to the hospice on Wednesday. Their improved controls and manoeuvrability will help to ensure that our patients always receive the best possible care.

"While we'll no longer need the beds that we've replaced, there are still lots of people who will find them useful. That's why we've donated them to NHS Highland, helping them to increase their patient capacity as they respond to the Covid-19 outbreak.

"Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to Give a Cuddle. The benefits of this appeal will continue to be felt by patients throughout the Highlands for a long time."
