As people prepare to come together this Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the historic reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Highland Council convener, expresses his congratulations to Her Majesty on the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne

Councillor Bill Lobban said: “On behalf of my fellow Members and the staff working for Highland Council I wish to express our sincere congratulations to The Queen on her 70 years reign.

“This is a historic occasion as it is the first time any British monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee. I am delighted that in recognition of Her Majesty’s Queens Platinum Jubilee Weekend we will be flying the Union Flag from our civic buildings and arrangements are underway to light up Inverness Town House and Ness Bridge in red, white and blue from this evening right through until Monday night.”

The Highland Council has approved an additional public holiday so all Council offices and schools will be closed on Friday 3 June. They will reopen as normal on Monday 6 June.

The Convener added: “Communities, individuals and groups are busy making plans to commemorate so as well as congratulating Her Majesty, I also wish all the organisers and everyone who attends a Platinum Jubilee event a very happy time.”
