THE birthday of one of Ross-shire's most famous sons has been celebrated.

It was on October 10 in 1802 that fossil hunter, folklorist, stonemason and social justice campaigner Hugh Miller was born in Cromarty.

A stonemason to trade, he went on to become a prolific writer and journalist, combining his religious beliefs with a passion for geology and folklore.

His cottage, dating to 1711, is now a museum owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

High Life Highland marked the occasion by sharing a link to a treasure trove of information about Miller contained on the Am Baile website.

It includes an audio extract in which Bill Sinclair finds out more about Miller's cottage from Mary Fyfe.

It can be found here .
