Members of the Helmsdale community were invited to try out a fleet of new eBikes at an open day held by Helmsdale & District Development Trust (HDDT) in partnership with Cycling UK on April 24.

The community owned bikes were funded by The Energy Savings Trust, Coastal Communities, Helmsdale Railway Station and SSE Micro grant through the Community Council.

The Trust currently own four e-bikes and are about to take delivery of an e-cargo bike for their kitchen garden.

They hope to add more styles to their fleet of bikes to ensure they have something to suit everyone.

Amanda Wagstaffe from Cycling UK and Golspie Bothy came along to support the Trust with advice and training for our new e-bikes.

She said: "The Golspie Bothy was delighted to support HDDT with training and advice on their e-bikes as well as those who attended on the day. E-bikes are a wonderful medium which can benefit people in many ways.

"From giving access to getting outside with ease if you choose to enjoy our beautiful countryside. It's a cheaper mode of transport and what ever you use your bike for you have the added bonus of the health benefits."

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “A number of these bikes will be available free to loan to the local community. The open day was a chance for the locals to register their interest in the e-bikes and have a go. The bikes will also be available for hire for visitors to the area.

“If anyone is interested in trying out the bikes they can contact local development officer Mary Stewart at ldo@hddt.org or on 07483175276.”
