A Christmas lights group in a small Sutherland community has made its own distinctive tribute to front line workers helping others in the battle against Covid-19.

The Light Up Lairg team are more used to erecting cheerful, yuletide lighting displays featuring Santas, snowmen and icicles.

But members were determined to show their gratitude and solidarity to those who are putting their own lives at risk looking after coronavirus patients in hospital wards across the UK.

The heart shaped tribute, with the letters NHS in the middle and Lairg on the top has been erected in a prime spot at the Sutherland Arms Hotel site overlooking Little Loch Shin.

Its location and vivid blue lighting means it is easily spotted from afar.

A Light Up Lairg spokeswoman said the light was made last Thursday and would remain in place during the crisis.

"The Light Up Lairg team hope it will put a smile on all those working in our front line," she said.

"Thank you to all the incredible nurses, doctors and NHS support staff and carers, who are working flat out to fight coronavirus."

Light Up Lairg is running an Easter drawing competition with entrants asked to upload their creations on to its Facebook page. Winners to be announced on Easter Sunday.
