ENTRIES for the Great Wilderness Challenge are already open for next year – the 2020 event which should have happened yesterday, was cancelled due to Covid-19.

One of the biggest single-day fundraising events in the north, the Great Wilderness Challenge has hauled in £4million for charity in its 34-year history, around £1.3million of that for Highland Hospice, which inspired the inaugural event back in 1986.

The original gruelling 25-mile trek between Dundonnell and Poolewe has since been added to with 13 and seven mile options.

Last year, two limited mobility routes were added meaning that people of all levels of fitness and ability can now take part.

Over 500 now participate in the event each year.

The Great Wilderness Challenge posted: "As Saturday approaches and passes we will be thinking of the entire GWC community – participants, volunteers, support teams and charities – wishing you all well, and hoping you have a great day wherever you happen to be.

"We will all miss the camaraderie, banter, laughs and tales of endless climbs, raging rivers, bottomless bogs and fiendish midge attacks!

"We send you our (socially distanced) best wishes and look forward to seeing you all again for another memorable day in 2021.

"Next year's GWC will be held on Saturday, August 14 , 2021 and you can now enter online
