Terminal cancer patient ‘in awe’ of former footballer Ashley Cain following chance encounter on his world record fundraising push
A Wick granny and great granny says she is “quite shocked” after her chance meeting with former footballer Ashley Cain during his visit to Caithness and Sutherland last week on a major fundraising challenge.
Christina Davidson, who will be celebrating her 70th birthday this year, feels inspired after her chance weekend encounter with Cain in a lay by outside Brora, as he made his way north.
Davidson has been diagnosed with a terminal cancer following episodes of breast and lung cancer diagnoses which have metastasised to her brain.
Meeting the inspirational fundraiser, who started a charity in his late daughter’s name to fight childhood cancer, has given Davidson a major boost.
She had stopped with her partner Alan to give a donation but has, herself, been bowled over.
After her own trials and tribulations she says she is now “buzzing”.
“It must be hard going for him,” Christina reflected. “What he is doing in the memory of his daughter is amazing. He is such a nice guy.
“I’m in awe of what he is doing. It’s given me such a lift. As I am sure it will others. I know life is short and we have to make the most of our time – especially with family and friends. Full credit to him. He is an absolute tonic”.
Ashley Cain was in the region on a world record bid to run, cycle and kayak the length of Britian three times - during which he wil cover a distance of more than 2700 miles.
The event is raising funds for the Azaylia Foundation – a charity named after his daughter Azaylia Diamond Cain who died from leukaemia at just eight months old.
When he arrived at John O’Groats at the end of his first leg, Ashley was given a hero’s welcome, with the likes of World’s Strongest Man Tom Stoltman on hand to welcome him.
