Golspie High School head teacher Mark Evans and his parent council remain totally opposed to the school’s bus park being opened up to other vehicles, it has been reported.

It had been hoped that cars and motorhomes could be allowed to use the bus park, located next to the school and to the rear of Golspie Medical Practice, in a bid to provide more parking space and make it easier for visitors to spend time in the village.

A compromise solution which would see the bus park opened up only during school holidays has not found favour with Mr Evans and the parent council.

Councillor Richard Gale has previously acknowledged that the bus park can be “manic” at school drop-off and pick-up times.

He said at a meeting of Golspie Community Council on Monday night: “There are issues there, the safety of kids being paramount. The school want to keep the bus park empty all the time. I would like to see it being used outwith term time.

“I am still of the opinion if the school is not in, there are no issues as far as safety is concerned.”

Community council chairman Ian Sutherland said: “The bottom line is that the head teacher and the parent council are opposed to it and I get their point, but for the summer holidays, I cannot see a problem. There will be no more discussions now until next term.”

Secretary Henrietta Marriott said it had been pointed out to her by a former teacher that there was a designated path between the school fence and the car park and arrangements could be made to improve safety, such as moving the school fence further into the playing field and ensuring buses parked with their doors towards the school. Pupils could also be escorted to and from the bus park by teachers.

Work has been undertaken recently to improve parking facilities at the nearby Fountain Road car park with new white lining and electric vehicle charging points.
