Golspie pupils mark retirement of popular teacher

Tribute has been paid to a well-known local artist and popular Sutherland teacher on his retirement from the classroom.

Art teacher Ian Westacott is leaving after more than 20 years spent in Sutherland schools introducing pupils to art and encouraging them to release their own creativity.

And Golspie Primary School showed their appreciation at a leaving presentation which took place before the school broke up for the summer holidays.

Pupils made farewell cards and also presented a book of good wishes.

Staff at the school handed over gifts as did members of the parent council.

In return Mr Westacott presented the school with a beautiful piece of his art work.

Head teacher Simon Scott read out a poem he had composed specially for the occasion and wished him all the best.

Mr Westacott, a printmaker as well as a painter, will continue to work independently as an artist. His art work has been exhibited internationally.

Born and brought up in Victoria, Australia, he gained a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts.

He moved to Scotland in the 1990s.
