A young sports volunteer from Brora has been hailed as a “fantastic role model” after being awarded a Leadership Award by East Sutherland Active Schools.

Jake, a pupil at Golspie High School, received his award, along with a High Life Highland ‘hoodie’, after putting in 25 hours of leadership volunteering helping the sporting cause in his local community.

East Sutherland Active Schools, in a post on social media, noted Sixth-year pupil Jake for being “very busy and proactive” while leading various sports sessions with Brora Youth Room.

Jake has also shown his leadership qualities as one of Golspie High School’s young ambassadors, and is now working towards another accolade, as the school’s Sports Ambassador.

Gemma Paterson, Jake’s PE teacher at Golspie High School, : “Jake has gone above and beyond in his volunteering both in school and out, and we are extremely proud of his hard work so far.

“He is currently working on his Level 6 Sports Leader Award and has also been selected as our Sports Ambassador for Golspie High School.

“He is a fantastic role model for the younger generations and we are excited to see what he does next!”

As well as playing amateur football himself for local club Brora Wanderers as a goalkeeper, some of Jake’s leadership hours have been spent coaching aspiring young footballers in the village, with Brora Rangers youth and Clyne Colts.

Colin Hexley, who coaches Brora Rangers / Clyne Colts boys football, said: “Jake helped me out with the Brora Youths for many months and did a tremendous job.

“He’s welcome back any time. It’s great to see him doing so well.

“He’s a great lad and has all the potential in the world.”
