There are currently three households in the Golspie area hosting Ukrainian refugees, it has been stated.

Golspie councillor Becky Shaw said two more households were expecting to welcome refugees in the next three to four weeks and another couple of households were looking into the possibility of giving some of those fleeing from the Russian invasion a place to stay.

Speaking at the community council meeting on Monday evening, Mrs Shaw said: “There is one child in the primary school with two more arriving and two children in the secondary school.

“There is a bit of an issue around language teaching because these are young children with a rudimentary knowledge of English.

“We have got to see how Highland Council can help and support them. It is really just thinking of clever solutions - can we provide additional English language classes?”

She added that there was a similar situation in Dornoch as in Golspie.

Golspie High School posted on its social media page earlier this week: "Last week we welcomed our first Ukrainian pupil to Golspie High School during his time here. What a delight it is having him here sharing his musical performance skills with us all."
