Twenty eight S3 and S4 pupils of Golspie High School are currently in the middle of a two-week visit to Thann in Alsace in France.

The Golspie pupils welcomed their exchange partners to Scotland in May and now they are sampling French hospitality.

They have paid visits to a First World War cemetery and battle ground, Stasbourg, where they saw many beautiful and famous buildings like the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights and the city’s famous cathedral.

Outside the cathedral, two buskers playing jigs and reels prompted a spontaneous Virginia Reel from the pupils, much to the delight of the buskers and fellow tourists.

They have also visited Basle in Switzerland, to see an Art Gallery and Mulhouse to experience the Museum of Electricity.

They have enjoyed a trip to an Ice Cream factory (called "Alba"), a chocolate factory and had a run on an enormous "Death Slide". To the relief of some of the girls, time was set aside to engage in "retail therapy" in a large mall.

At an evening ceilidh for parents, members of the world famous Sutherland Schools Pipe Band entertained an audience to rapturous applause.

Members of the group also sang and the French pupils had the opportunity to brush up on their Scottish Country Dancing skills which they had learned while in Scotland in May.

After the weekend with their partners’ families, still to come are trips to a theme park in Germany, a visit of local vineyards and a day spent in the exchange school, College Remy Faesch.

All this before they bid fond farewells on Thursday and the Golspie pupils return home.
