Three Sutherland venues have been included in a non-profit, summer tour by Speak Easy Circus and various artists to raise money for Barnardo’s children’s charity.

The tour kicks off on Monday and will visit Lochinver Village Hall the following Wednesday, June 29; Durness Village Hall on June 30; and Fountain Road Hall, Golspie, on July 3.

The 12-day tour has 11 gigs, three of which are in Sutherland.

Speak Easy Circus are an experimental five-piece indie/funk “outfit” from the East End of Glasgow where they have built a strong following since their formation in 2018.

Band spokesman Jack Avison said: “Drawing on the eclectic influences of each member of the band, Speak Easy Circus have created a unique sound that has proved difficult to define.

“At various times we have been labelled as indie, jazz, and funk as well as “too mainstream, “too experimental” and “retro soul” – something the band takes as a huge compliment.

“We have created an electric and unmissable live show.”

The unique sound has resulted in their songs being picked up by radio shows including BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart show and Amazing Radio’s Jim Gellatly.

However the band has been affected by lockdown and the coronavirus pandemic with many of their shows having to be cancelled.

“We decided to break free of Glasgow this summer and set ourselves a challenge of travelling around Scotland,” said Mr Avison. “We will be playing in some of the most remote parts of the country and exploring places we have never visited or played before - while raising money for an amazing cause.

“A priority for each member of the ban was the positive impact a tour such as this could have and we decided to use its as an opportunity to raise money for Barnardo’s.”

All the proceeds will go directly to Barnardo’s (Scotland) Highland Services and will be used to support children and young people in the Highlands.

The 12-day tour has 11 gigs in total including the three Sutherland dates, which all begin at 7pm with tickets costing £8/£10.
