Girlguiding members from Caithness and Sutherland got a taste of life in Norse times when they took part in a virtual camp over Zoom.

The theme was "Viqueens" – as opposed to Vikings.

Girls and leaders from as far afield as Thurso and Bonar Bridge joined together to enjoy a full programme of activities and games. They listened to a Viking story and were able to try out whittling, writing in runes, making a leather pouch and even cooking some Norse fare.

No camp is complete without a camp fire and they managed that too, with everyone joining in with favourite songs.

Liz Bamber, county commissioner for Caithness and Sutherland, said: "This was the first time the northern counties had held such an event and, with such good fun had by all, it certainly won’t be the last."

Nine-year-old Sophie Laird, of Thurso, managed to carve a whale out of soap using her whittling skills. Sophie said she enjoyed all the craft activities at the virtual camp and sitting out by the "camp fire".

Zoe Wallace (9), also of Thurso, said she enjoyed the jewellery-making most.
