Torrisdale Beach, that beautiful kilometre of sand which connects the Naver and Borgie river mouths, was briefly almost as busy as the nearby NC500 last weekend when nine vintage tractors led a procession of more than 30 people from Bettyhill to Skerray.

The expedition was in memory of David Mackay, better known as Eskie, of Achnabat, Skerray, who passed away suddenly in January this year. It was organised by his wife, Susan, and sons Jamie, Daniel and Harris, as a fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation.

The journey started at 10am on Saturday at Rosal Place, Bettyhill, where Eskie was born and, after crossing the beach, passed by Torrisdale where he grew up, before ending at Hillside, Achnabat, the home which he and Susan built and which they shared for many years.

The participants paused at various points along the route to share a snack, and a wee dram, and reminisce on their absent friend, starting with the Black Rock which marks the middle of the beach, followed by Torrisdale itself, where Eskie’s mother, Mabel, provided a variety of refreshments.

After that it was over the hill to Achnabat where Susan took over as host and provided a sumptuous barbeque together with an evening of games and music, and perhaps the occasional dram. A highlight of the beach section was a litter picking competition which, amongst other debris, brought in ten kilos of plastic.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped in whatever way,” said Susan. “Local businesses who contributed numerous raffle prizes, all those who gave and are still giving so generously, and all of David’s friends who came on the trip to make it such a memorable event. The amount of money raised is amazing.”

So far £5,285 has been realised and more is still coming in. To donate, click here.
