Highland Health Board finally decided this week to bring the axe down on resident surgery at Golspie's Lawson Memorial Hospital in a move which has angered many. At a meeting in Inverness on Tuesday the board agreed overwhelmingly that the type of surgical services on offer at the hospital were no longer appropriate for the present or the future.

The move has shocked and angered local MP Robert Maclennan and district councillors who had understood there to be more than one option on the table for the Lawson and who wanted widespread public consultation to be initiated.

Reconstruction and refurbishment work is currently being undertaken at Brora Police Station. The interior space is to be increased by extending about 2.5 metres to the rear and there will be improved facilities for both police staff and the public. The public counter is to be radically altered with the addition of a small interview room which will, when required, allow more privacy to the public.

Sutherland is now in sight of getting its first public swimming pool. The site is at Golspie beside the secondary school, and the £108,000 contract, approved by the Scottish Education Department, has been awarded by the county council to a local firm, Alexander Sutherland Ltd, building contractors, who submitted the lowest offer. It is hoped that work on the pool will start in the middle of March.

To give impetus to their all-out drive to attract industries to Sutherland, the county council are forming a completely new development department to deal with this pressing problem. Last Monday they decided to advertise for a development officer with top status and a salary on the £30,000 mark. His objective will be industrial development and to ensure that Sutherland's name is in the forefront when promotion schemes are being carried out in the south. Presently the burden of development is being borne by Mr J. J. McMillan with no assistance.

A MEETING of Sutherland Education Authority was told by Golspie member A. N. Macaulay that one of the most serious and urgent matters to deal with was finding a hostel in connection with Golspie H.G. School. He was sorry to say that many of the pupils were housed in surroundings which were most unsatisfactory, and yet they could not help it – there was nowhere else where they could be put up.

Mr J Ross, Brora, asked if it was not possible to have a hostel built locally. He said if an estimate could be got of how much it would cost, then the committee would have something tangible to go on. The matter was remitted to the Plans Committee.

High winds, accompanied with showers of snow prevailed during the later part of last week. Up to now, this winter has been the mildest experienced in the district for many years. Hill stock are in fair condition but the testing period will be from now till middle of spring.
