25 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 26, 1997

Only once before in the 17-year history of the revived Invercharron Traditional Highland Gathering has the occasion been graced by having a lady chieftain but, as with Nancy Nicolson three years ago, the 1997 chieftain, well known entertainer and performer Fiona Kennedy, charmed everyone with whom she came into contact. After the games, Fiona and her friends gave an impressive performance at an evening concert in Ardgay Community Centre.

The Kinlochbervie area is to receive a new BBC television relay station in the coming months. This relay station, similar to that in Durness, should once and for all solve the difficulty of television reception for the majority of Kinlochbervie residents and many on the shores of Loch Inchard.

Plans to establish a golf training centre in the former school hostel at Ross House in Dornoch remain on course. An application for Euro-Objective 1 funding has been lodged. The £600,000 project is being spearheaded by Thurso College.

50 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 22, 1972

Sutherland Planning Committee have called for a report on Ministry of Defence activities at Faraid Head, near Durness, and what their future plans there are. They decided on this at Dornoch last Monday when they considered a petition signed by seven residents at the county council's crafts village at Balnakeil, near Durness, who felt that any development at Faraid Head as a base or firing range would only serve to diminish the area's tourist appeal and would certainly not produce any income equivalent to the present tourist spending.

The first Post Office minibus on the Highland mainland to carry passengers as well as mail went into regular service last Monday from Kylesku. The driver was Mr Roddie Macleod, former ferryman. The service was inaugurated last Friday afternoon when the opening ceremony was performed by Mr Donald McBain, county convener. Afterwards he was was taken in the minibus, which carries nine passengers, on the run to Elphin Post Office.

100 YEARS AGO

From the newspaper of September 21, 1922

The supplementary appeal for funds towards a memorial clock for Clyne War Memorial has met with a most hearty and generous response throughout the parish, surpassing all expectations, the sum collected within a few days amounting to no less than £176 8s.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has presented a magnificent two-handled silver challenge bowl on an ebonized plinth for competition at the Sutherland Crofters' Show. The inscription upon the bowl is as follows: "Sutherland Crofters' Show, Smallholders' Section, challenge cup presented by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, K.G., K.T."

Hi Grace the Duke of Sutherland who addressed a largely attended meeting in the Town Hall, Inverness, last night, had a great reception. He received a great ovation when he rose to give his address and his able speech on the League of Nations was warmly applauded. He dealt with his subject in a most masterly, clear-cut man
