The six-knot tide rip at Loch Fleet in East Sutherland has proved too much for a 300-metre oil pollution boom in an emergency exercise to ward off spillage from an imaginary tanker out in the Moray Firth. The inflatable boom, made up of 13 sections linked together by steel plates, burst within an hour of the tide flowing into the sea loch. The placing of the boom was an attempt to validate Highland Council’s emergency plan to minimise pollution in the event of an accidental oil spillage.

The induction of the Rev John Lincoln, formerly of Altnaharra and Farr, to the linked charge of Balquhidder with Killin and Ardeonaig took place recently in Killin Church.

Sutherland County Council are to say "No" to the Ministry of Defence proposal to site an experimental gunnery range across the water, near Tain, in Easter Ross. That was their decision at Dornoch last Monday when members expressed concern about the effect the firing might have on the fishing industry at Helmsdale, on the East Sutherland tourist industry and on the developing commercial air strip on Dornoch links.

The Northern Presbytery of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland are protesting at Sutherland County Council's decision to open the public swimming pool at Golspie on Sundays. The presbytery have sent a letter expressing their disappointment to the county clerk, Mr J. B. Rodger. The pool has just been opened.

The new Sutherland Caledonian Pipe Band are getting a grant of up to £100 from the county education committee to help towards the purchase of equipment.

Under the auspices of the Rogart Post of the British Legion, the Rogart Highland Games are to be held on a larger scale than has been done since they were inaugurated around two years ago.

This year, under a large committee, of which that old Sutherland favourite, Mr George Murray, and Commandant J. Mackay, Corry, are members, with Mr Colin M Murray, as hon. secretary, they have arranged for a large number of events to be open to all-comers, besides a few local events and a great clay pigeon shoot.

The games will be held on a park at Davochbeg, adjoining the railway station on Friday, 21st July.

As it is too early yet to give full particulars of all the chief attractions, we beg to draw the attention of athletes to the bills posted in the various districts and trust that they will all practice hard and come forward and give the Rogart Comrades every support in their new venture.

Look out for further announcements which will be made shortly.
