GROWING tourism traffic on a Sutherland community’s narrow roads has sparked the launch of a trial shuttle bus in a bid to tackle the problem.

Brora Community Enterprises hopes its new shuttle bus trial will not only ease tourist road traffic in and around the village’s nearby attractions, but also encourage visitors to indulge in more “slow tourism” – boosting the economy at the same time.

The service started last weekend and will provide a half-hourly weekend shuttle between Brora village centre and out-of-town sites, including Brora Heritage Centre, Clynelish Distillery and Loch Brora, until the end of August.

The organisation said it hoped the service will reduce visitors’ reliance on car usage on single-track roads in the area, which have been increasingly busy in recent weeks.

The service is free and is provided by Brora Community Bus. Volunteer drivers and passenger assistants are available to provide tourist information along the route.

George Gunn, secretary of Brora Community Enterprises, the operators of the Brora Community Bus, said: “By trialling this easy access to Brora’s out-of-town attractions, we hope to promote slow tourism and ease the staycation congestion on our roads.

“Taking the shuttle bus is an excellent way to see Brora’s sights. Users can hop on or hop off at any point or stay on board for a short tour of the area, completely free of charge.

“The reception for our service has already been fantastic and has been warmly welcomed by local people.

“We look forward to welcoming many passengers on board in the coming weeks.”
