First fish of season caught on River Brora

The first fish of the year has been caught on the river Brora today – three weeks after the season opened on February 1.

John McMorran, Balnacoil Estate manager, caught a 7lb springer on the Blackwater tributary using a 2" orange body and yellow tail tube fly.

The salmon, which had no sea lice, was returned to the water in accordance with river policy.

The catch came just days after rising temperatures saw the river, which had been ice-bound for weeks, flow freely. Click on the video link below to watch ice slowly dislodging from the Falls Pool at Balnacoil.
