FIVE people, including four firefighters, were taken to hospital after a collision on a Ross-shire road during an emergency callout.

The accident happened on the A890, at Mammit Hill, on the Stromeferry Road.

A fire appliance from Inverness Community Fire Station was in collision with a commercial van under blue light conditions during a callout to Dunvegan, on Skye, during the Sunday evening incident.

Area Commander Michael Humphreys, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s local senior officer for Highland, said: “We can confirm that on Sunday, May 26 at around 7.41pm, one of our fire appliances was involved in a road traffic collision on the A890, at Mammit Hill, Stromeferry Road in Strathcarron.

“The appliance from Inverness Community Fire Station was responding to a 999-call under blue light conditions when it collided with a commercial van.

“Our operations control immediately mobilised three further appliances and specialist resources to the scene and five casualties were removed from the vehicles and taken to Raigmore Hospital.

“This included four firefighters. Two firefighters were later discharged, and the van driver suffered minor injuries. Two firefighters remain in hospital. All staff are being fully supported.”

The original 999 call was to an animal rescue incident in Dunvegan. It was attended by additional appliances mobilised from Portree and Uig.
