A PROJECT to replace a community hall in north Sutherland that had seen better days, is nearing completion.

Managers of Armadale Village Hall say the new-build is “nearly over the line”, with only a few finishing touches needed.

Local people are delighted that the new-build Armadale Hall is almost ready for use.

Work to replace the old, corrugated-iron roofed hall, which dated back to the 1920s, began in March 2020, but was delayed due to coronavirus.

Hall chairman Joyce Campbell said: “The construction phase of our new village hall is now nearly complete.

“Local contractor David Mackay is working on landscaping, fencing, installing a new cattle grid and gates around the car park areas.”

Volunteers from the village recently planted 400 hawthorn hedge plants around the new hall and bare ground will be resown in the spring.

Mrs Campbell said it was planned shortly to give a virtual tour of the building, which has been funded by SSE Strathy North Community Fund, Caithness and North Sutherland Fund, LEADER and the Robertson Trust.

Social media users have posted their delight.

Heather Christian said: “Absolutely super news”, while Barry Smith paid tribute to Mrs Campbell and the hall committee, writing: “Well done to the village hall team.”
