She has been a well-known figure in Golspie and the wider area for many years and has given a helping hand to local groups.

So when Jeanette Johnston, whose husband Hugh died in 2018, announced she was moving out of the county to live closer to family members, friends were determined her departure would not go unmarked.

A ‘farewell supper’ was held in her honour at Brora Golf Club, organised by East Rotary Club president Linda Graham and past president Alistair Risk.

Mr Risk said: “Hugh was a founder member of the club – that was in the days when women could not join. But Jeanette soon became the unofficial ‘mother of the club’ and for more than 30 years has been at the centre of events.

“She has recited poetry at Burns Suppers, supported fundraising events, attended the White Heather Club tribute nights and conferences as well as social weekends.

"Her contribution to Rotary has been so great that she was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship at our recent 30th anniversary dinner.”

But Jeanette, who grew up in Lairg, was also active outwith Rotary and was known as the “flower lady” at Dunrobin Castle where she created many jaw-dropping floral displays.

She also made many friends at St Andrew’s Church of Scotland, Golspie.

Her farewell supper turned into a trip down memory lane with those present recalling stories from the past.

Mr Risk said: “Several hours of reminiscence were enjoyed along with a tear or two as everyone remembered the good old days and said their farewells to a great lady.”

“Linda presented a lovely bouquet of flowers to Jeanette and the meal at the golf club was delicious.

Jeanette is moving to Newport on Tay where she will be close to her children and grandchildren.
