Election 2021: Former First Minister Alex Salmond to launch Alba Party's Highlands and Islands campaign today along with four candidates battling for regional seats in Holyrood
Former First Minister Alex Salmond was set today to launch the Highlands and Islands campaign for his new Alba party in Inverness.
Mr Salmond will introduce candidates standing for Highlands and Islands regional or list seats – Kirk Torrance, Craig Berry, Josh Robertson and Judith Reid.
Scotland’s former First Minister has been busy since the conclusion of the committee probe into the now notorious handling of allegations of sexual harassment.
The party was launched in March 2021 and quickly saw a number of high profile defections from the SNP, including two MPs.
It is standing on a platform of achieving a "super majority" to get a second independence referendum as well as a Green New Deal and creating a Scottish Renewable Corporation.
Speaking before the launch Mr Salmond said: “I am delighted to introduce a strong team of talented and committed candidates all firmly rooted within their local communities.
“Alba has shown this week with the launch of our manifesto that we have the ideas to kick start economic recovery in the Highlands and Islands.
“We will invest in new affordable homes for rent across the Highlands & Islands through a Scottish National Housing Company, and we will make the Highlands and Islands Scotland’s renewable energy powerhouse through a Green New Deal and a Scottish National Renewable Corporation.”
The party’s lead candidate in the Highlands and Islands, Kirk Torrance, said: “A vote for Alba is a vote to seize the opportunity of independence; for Scotland to regain the normal rights and responsibilities which every other country in the world enjoys, except us. For me, the Highlands and Islands are central to Scotland's bright future."
