Connie Ramsay wins race to represent Tain and Easter Ross on Highland Council





A NORTH ward has a new councillor following today’s count after a by-election held yesterday.

Connie Ramsay has claimed the vacant Tain and Easter Ross seat on Highland Council after emerging the winner in the local by-election.

The Liberal Democrat candidate, a former judo star, was one of the first to throw her hat in the ring after former SNP councillor Derek Louden stood down.

She promised to fight for the Tain Royal Academy Community Complex (TRACC) facility amidst uncertainty over the future of the swimming pool facility.

Ms Ramsay was one of six candidates who contested the vacancy.

Voters went to the poll yesterday and the by-election count was held this morning and relayed live on the council’s social media channels.

Voting was by the single transferable vote and Ms Ramsay emerged as the winner at stage 6 of the count.

The turnout was 33.8 per cent.

It’s a three-member ward and Ms Ramsay will join fellow ward members Laura Dundas (Highland Independent) and Maureen Ross (Highland Independent).

The candidates who stood were:

BARNETT, Andrew - Scottish Greens
NEWMAN, Peter - Scottish National Party (SNP)
NIMMONS, Eric – Independent
RAMSAY, Connie - Scottish Liberal Democrats
WILSON, Stuart - Reform UK
