Drink driving continues to be a major concern.
Drink driving continues to be a major concern.

Nineteen drivers will be reported for drink or drug driving offences in the Highlands & Islands during a two week national safety campaign.

Eighteen of these relate to drink driving - 15 men and three women - while one man will be reported for alleged drug driving.

Detections were made throughout the region during the campaign, with the ages of those reported ranging from 18 to 65 year olds.

During the same period last year 15 drink drivers and three drug drivers were detected.

Road Policing Inspector Neil Lumsden said: "Every single driver we find under the influence of alcohol or drugs is disappointing as they show that, for some motorists, the message is not getting through.

"All it takes is one driver to be under the influence to put other entirely innocent drivers and road users at risk. It will never be acceptable.

"Men and women of a wide range of ages have been stopped during the last fortnight so this is clearly not an issue with one group of people.

"This campaign may now be over but tackling drink driving remains a priority for officers in the Highlands and Islands and we will continue to take robust action to remove offenders from the roads.

"We know that the vast majority of people do not tolerate drink drivers and nor should they have to. You can pass on any information you have by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency, while you can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
