More than £3000 was donated to good causes in Sutherland last year by the Edinburgh Sutherland Association.

The total awarded by the charity to groups in the county in the past nine years now stands at around £18,000.

And applications are now invited for funding for 2019 with a deadline of Friday, June 28.

Association president Andrew Mackenzie, who hails from Stoer, paid tribute to those who help the group with its fundraising events.

He said: “We can only donate to local good causes if we raised money through fundraising, donations and sponsorship.”

The awards granted last year were:

£400 - Connie Mackinnon, Bonar Bridge, to help with accommodation for a self-funded research project.

£360 - Golspie High School for transport costs of an outward bound expedition.

£300 - Lairg and District Learning Centre for Gaelic classes; Feis Chataibh to buy equipment; Alexander Murray John, Lairg, to attend a choir summer course.

£280 - Golspie Brownies for a tent.

£244 - Sutherland Provincial Mod for the purchase of three prize quaichs.

£200 - Rosehall Primary School to create a vegetable garden; Dornoch Festival Week for new resources; Dornoch Allsorts afterschool club to help with the running of a woodland activity. Brora Cubs towards the cost of travel to an activity centre.

£150 - Dornoch Firth Campus to pay for pupils to attend Clearances workshops.

A decision on this year’s funding applications will be made at the association’s AGM in Edinburgh on Wednesday July 3.
