The Edinburgh Sutherland Association is calling all charities and worthy causes, including individuals, based in, or with links to, Sutherland to apply for funding.

The charity, which holds fundraising events for good causes in Sutherland, was established in 1866 to maintain links between the county and Sutherlanders who are now based in Scotland's capital.

The association’s objectives are to:

  • give assistance where required to natives of Sutherland or other deserving persons
  • aid the education of young natives of Sutherland
  • promote the culture of Sutherland (including its art, literature, music and language)

Last year, the committee decided to donate funds to the Sutherland Care Forum, Brora Primary Parent Council and community singing group Big Sing Macleod in Skerray.

The group also donated to some aspiring youngsters in the county, such as downhill cyclist Lewis Duncan from Brora and marine biology student Ruaraidh Jack from Bettyhill.

In total, the committee agreed to donate £2500 to good causes in Sutherland in 2021.

Lewis Duncan (16) from Brora, who recently competed in the UCI World Cup, was a recipient of funding from the Edinburgh Sutherland Association in 2021.

Andrew Mackenzie, a Stoer native, is president of the association.

He said: "We are proud that over the past eleven years the association has donated over £23,500 to good causes in the county.

"We are delighted to have returned to in person fundraising events in recent months, including our Christmas dinner in December and our annual ceilidh in March.

"However, we have also capitalised on the move to online platforms, hosting an evening with Brora photographer, Craig Mackay, via Zoom in November.

"So, we now have some funds for donating to good causes in Sutherland and we invite applications for funding for 2022.

"A decision on funding will be taken by the committee in June or July.

"We are very grateful to all those who have assisted with events and fundraising to date. We can only donate to local good causes if we raise money through fundraising, donations and sponsorship."

Secretary Steven Anderson, formerly of Dornoch, said: "Applicants should demonstrate in writing why they are deserving within the meaning of the objectives of the Association.

"We are particularly interested in requests looking for a specific amount for a project or part of a project."

The closing date for receipt of applications is close on Friday June 24. A decision on funding will be taken by the committee in late June or early July 2022.

Those wishing to donate directly to the association or explore its aims and past recent funding can also find more information on the website.
