Dr Fortune back on our screens
Brora GP Dr Mary Fortune is back on the box next week in "Dr Fortune’s Australian Casebook", a new three part series featuring her return to the Australian outback to work in an Aboriginal Clinic.
Mary is shocked by the state of Aboriginal healthcare with many struck down with preventable third world diseases. Tracing the source of disease takes Mary to a nearby Aboriginal housing estate, or so called "Reserve" where she is stunned by the conditions.
In 2008 she accepted an unusual medical placement in the Australian outback which featured in the previous BBC Scotland series, "Desperately Seeking Doctors".
On her way home, Mary pledged she would only return to Australia if she could work in the area of the greatest medical needs – Aboriginal healthcare.
Two years on and Mary prepares to fulfil her commitment when invited to work in an Aboriginal Clinic for three months in one of the most remote inhabited towns in Australia – Kununurra, the capital of the vast Kimberly region of Western Australia.
In this first programme, on Sunday 4 September on BBC Two Scotland, 9-10pm, Mary tries to help one of her patients with Rheumatic Heart disease to find a suitable home after discovering they live with up to 22 other people in a small rented property.
