A MILITARY piper from Sutherland was given the honour of playing for 'Captain Tom' – 100-year-old veteran Sir Tom Moore, who hit the headlines during the Covid-19 pandemic for his fundraising achievements.

Lance Corporal Hugh Donald Mackay (29), a Dornoch native, played at the passing out parade of Cambrai Company at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate on September 10, when Captain Moore was the inspecting officer. The company had completed 10 weeks of training, given virtually because of coronavirus.

A former Dornoch Academy pupil, LCpl Mackay's mum Margaret MacNeil still lives in the town's Brannen Terrace. Growing up, he was a member of the Dornoch detachment of the Army Cadet Force from 2005-2007.

He underwent his basic Army training at the Harrogate College and is currently a member of The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland Pipes & Drums, based at Bourlon Barracks, Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

LCpl Mackay told the Northern Times that it had been an "honour" to play for inspecting officer Captain Tom.

"I had a meet and greet with him afterwards," he said.
