Dornoch’s Hogmanay street party is unlikely to go ahead again this year, according to the town’s community council chairman Patrick Murray.

The popular event, which attracts people from far afield, was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At Wednesday's online community council meeting, Mr Murray said: “It (the party) looks unlikely to be held because of the way regulations seem set to go.

“Entry would have to be policed and people would have to have vaccine certificates and that would make the whole thing impractical. The final decision has yet to be made, but it is unlikely.”

Mr Murray said he has also heard from Sutherland Deputy Lord Lieutenant Kim Tulloch, Dornoch, that the Remembrance Day Parade was set to be cancelled.

Community councillor Lesley Strang queried that decision.

She said she could understand why the street party could not go ahead but that the Remembrance Day parade was much more “manageable” – it was during the day, did not involve alcohol and was the type of event where social distancing regulations could easily be observed.

She said the community council would potentially face criticism if such events were cancelled.

David MacBeath said: “I cannot see why we cannot have a Rememberance event. That is just ridiculous."

It was agreed to speak to Ms Tulloch about the parade.
