An incident this week in which two campervans parked in Dornoch Town Square were keyed - scratched with a key - has been condemned by community councillors.

Dornoch Community Council treasurer Jerry Bishop brought up the act of vandalism at the end of the group's August meeting, which was held virtually via Zoom last night.

Campervans are an increasingly popular means of travel with many using them on tourism route NC500.

He said: “It is a very dangerous development when people are taking the law into their own hands.”

An influx of campervans and motorhomes into Sutherland since the easing of lockdown has caused tensions to rise in local communities.

Dornoch is a particular magnet for visitors because of its sandy beach and championship golf course. Difficulty has been experienced with campervans and motorhomes overnight parking in the beach area but steps are being taken to limit this.

It is understood two families were travelling together in the two campervans affected, which were parked in the centre of town.

Some family members are said to have gone to have a meal in a local hotel at the time the vandalism occurred.

The incident was reported to police - it is understood that a photograph had been obtained of the person involved.

Community councillor David MacBeath said at the virtual meeting: “This is not reflective of the people of Dornoch. We all moan about campervans but there are people spending good money in our town and this type of behaviour is totally unacceptable.”

The meeting agreed to put a post on its social media page making it clear that the community council deplored such behaviour and urging people not to commit acts of vandalism.

The Northern Times has approached Police Scotland for confirmation of the incident but has yet to hear back.
