A MOVE to turn a vacant Dornoch shop into a granny flat is being opposed by Dornoch Community Council.

An application has been lodged with Highland Council to change the use of the shop premises, which are part of the three-storey property known as Tigh na Furan on Castle Street.

The developer, who is named in planning documents as M Johnson, wants to remove the shop sign and reduce the size of its window with natural stone infill. Other alterations are also proposed including the replacement of a rear extension with a new structure.

The planning application was discussed by members of Dornoch Community Council at their July meeting.

The minutes read: "The recommendation reached by the subcommittee for planning was to submit an objection on the change of use from commercial to residential due to their being little retail space (in the town)."
