Dornoch baby and toddler group holds Burns celebration with haggis snack, stories, songs and rhymes





It is never too early to introduce young children to the genius of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns.

The Tuesday Tots Baby and Toddler Group, which meets weekly at the West Church Hall in Dornoch enjoyed a Burns celebration yesterday.

The Tuesday Tots is run by the Dornoch Firth Group (DFG) and 27 children aged from one month to three years attended the event.

They were joined by 10 crafters from DFG’s Knit and Natter Group.

Jen Smith, DFG community projects coordinator, said: “One of our board members and Trish Geddes from the Knit and Natter Group said the Selkirk Grace.

“We served haggis, neeps and tatties at snack time, which many of the children enjoyed!

“My colleague Eilidh and I read Scottish stories, songs and rhymes and there was traditional ceilidh music and dancing.

“The children also made flags from up-cycled tartan off-cuts that Yvonne Macrae of Tartan Creations in Dornoch gave us.

The Dornoch Firth Group is an independent charity which runs community groups and activities.

Tuesday Tots is on Tuesday mornings term-time 10am-11.30am and caters for children aged 0-5. The cost is £1.50 per session.

Burns events are taking place across Sutherland this weekend with tomorrow, January 25, marking the anniversary of the bard’s birth.
