Dornoch and Brora beaches retain Keep Scotland Beautiful awards

Two beaches in Sutherland are among 52 across Scotland to have won a prestigious 2025 beach award which celebrates clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches.

Dornoch Beach and Brora Beach have once again been recognised in the awards scheme.

Both beaches have held the award for many years, with Dornoch Beach having retained it for 31 consecutive years and Brora Beach for 24 years.

Only four beaches in the Highland region made the grade, with Nairn Central Beach and Loch Morlich also winners.

Now in its 33rd year, Scotland’s Beach Awards are run by the environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful. To win an award, beaches must meet stringent criteria.

The scheme focuses on three key areas - access, facilities and safety, local environmental quality, and community and heritage.

The awards also complement the work undertaken by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) on bathing water quality.

Dornoch Beach is cared for by community groups, volunteers, and others, including Dornoch Community Council, Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs, East Sutherland Rescue Association, and Dornoch Caravan Park operators.

Barry Fisher, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I would like to congratulate all those who do so much to protect, maintain and enhance our beaches, from the local authorities to the communities who care so passionately about these phenomenal assets.
